Difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery

Cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgeryCosmetic and reconstructive surgeries are becoming very popular these days but there is misconception spread all over and most of the people consider them same but fact is opposite to it, cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries differ from each other. Let’s see how cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries differ from each other and some examples regarding both the surgeries.
Cosmetic surgery is a discipline of medicines that focuses on improving and enhancing the appearance and looks by using surgical and medical methods. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on face, neck and all the other areas of the body. As cosmetic surgery just improves the aesthetic appearance, so, it is an elective procedure. On the other hand, reconstructive or plastic surgery is that specified surgical procedure that is dedicated to performing tasks that correct the defects of facial and other body areas. The defects that are corrected by using reconstructive surgeries may occur due to birth disorders, burns, traumas or other diseases. As reconstructive surgery is dedicated to correcting some malfunctioning of areas of the body, so it is not an elective procedure.

Cosmetic surgery enhance the appearance of a person by altering it to the desired aesthetic ideal. Physicians from a variety of medical fields perform cosmetic surgeries like facial plastic surgeons, dermatologists, general surgeons, ophthalmologists and plastic surgeons. Some examples of cosmetic surgeries are facelift, brow lift, cheek and chin implants, lip reduction and augmentation etc. – surgeries for improvement of facial aesthetics – and arm lift, breast lift, liposuction, thigh lift etc. – surgical procedures for improving body contours.
Reconstructive or plastic surgery is performed to reconstitute or reshape the tissues of defective body parts that restores the functioning of that area. In most of the cases, these kind of surgeries are done in hospitals and can be recovered by insurance policies. The examples of reconstructive or plastic surgeries are surgery for cleft lip of palate (birth defect), breast reconstruction (needed by the women who undergo mastectomy for cancer treatment), breast reduction (needed by the women who have abnormally large breasts causing other problems) etc.
Both cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries are surgical procedures performed either under local anesthesia or general anesthesia but the main difference lies in the results to be achieved. Reconstructive surgeries are performed as a need for resolving or correcting a defect while cosmetic surgery is performed for merely having desired appearance.
